Why Five-Star Reviews Don’t Prove a Course Is Effective: Prioritize Growth, Not Satisfaction

Most of what you need to know about your course’s outcomes can’t be found on a satisfaction survey. Why you shouldn’t stop at “five stars”

Most people trust five-star reviews without questioning them. That’s exactly why so many course creators need to understand why five-star reviews don’t prove a course is effective. We trust 5-star reviews when we choose a restaurant, buy a book, download an app, or pick a hotel. So it’s understandable that course creators do the same. If learners loved the course, the natural assumption is that the course must be effective.

And if you’ve ever built a course yourself, you probably know how easy it is to get swept up in the praise. I’ve been there. I believed the reviews myself until I realized what they weren’t measuring.

Five-star reviews measure satisfaction. Enjoyment. And yes, entertainment. They do not measure learning. And they do not measure whether the course supports a larger organizational goal. That matters, because most courses, no matter how “interesting” they might be, are not created for entertainment or enjoyment.

Training exists to support something bigger: fewer errors in clinical settings, improved clinical judgment, stronger device use, better customer retention, professional growth, or more leads at the top of a marketing funnel. It’s about the project, and the organizational objectives.

So let’s break down the 9 reasons why five-star reviews don’t prove a course is effective (online or in person), and what you should assess instead.

1. Five-star reviews reward comfort and entertainment, not competence

Learners praise courses that feel easy, polished, short, smooth, or just plain cool. Today, many learners also expect to be entertained. They want glitz, eye-catching visuals, a friendly narrator, and a little sparkle. When the production value is high, they feel good about the experience.

But entertainment is not education. A course can be engaging and still teach very little. It can feel fun and yet fail to change a single behavior. It can sparkle without building competence.

Let’s face it. Comfort earns five stars. Competence requires stretch. Stretch rarely feels comfortable. And let me be bold: If we tout our course as competency-based education, we cannot rely on a 5-star review as proof of competence.

2. Enjoyment is not an instructional metric

Learners often give high ratings for:

  • attractive slides
  • pleasant pacing
  • smooth narration
  • strong visuals
  • easy navigation
  • a friendly teaching style

These elements can support learning, but they do not prove that learning occurred. They show that learners enjoyed the experience, not that they gained knowledge or skill.

A beautifully decorated restaurant can still serve food that is bland or lukewarm. The ambience dazzles. The meal disappoints.

The same is true for courses, which is why five-star reviews don’t prove a course is effective.

3. Learners don’t know what they don’t know

This was a turning point for me.

For years, I believed the literally thousands of 5-star reviews I got from learners. I assumed my courses were strong. After I studied instructional design, I realized that some of my early work was pleasant but not effective. The learners enjoyed the experience, but the instruction lacked meaningful and measurable objectives, alignment, and practice opportunities.

In my rookie year of teaching at a prestigious university, my mentor, Lynn, told me, “Marie, don’t let the students tell you how to teach.” That was more than 40 years ago, and her words still ring true. Learners are not trained to evaluate:

  • alignment
  • cognitive scaffolding
  • sequencing
  • assessment quality
  • practice application
  • performance indicators

They respond to what they feel, not what they learned. And when someone cannot tell the difference, they give five-star reviews to courses that simply made sense in the moment.

Enjoyment feels like learning. It is not learning.

4. Five-star reviews tell you nothing about the learning gap or performance goal

Every strong course identifies two things:

  • What the learner cannot yet do (the learning gap)
  • What the learner should do differently at the end (the performance goal)

Reviews do not measure either one.

A learner can say the course was “great” and still walk away without the ability to perform the skill, use the device correctly, or make a safer clinical decision.

Five start ratings can’t compensate for misalignment. If the course misses the real performance target, it still misses.

5. Weak courses generate no complaints

When a course requires nothing from the learner, there is nothing to struggle with. No decisions. No application. No scenarios. No friction. No mental stretch.

Learners breeze through. They finish quickly. They enjoy the ease. And they rate it highly.

Ironically, stronger courses sometimes earn slightly lower reviews because they require effort. Effort can feel unpleasant. It can challenge assumptions. When I felt the sting of a 1-star review, my husband would ask me, “Whose sacred cow did you gore?” — his way of reminding me that some pushback is the price of challenging a comfortable assumption.

A lower rating can mean the learner had to think.

Five stars can mean the learner coasted.

Which one is truly “effective?”

6. You don’t learn much from the five-star or one-star reviews

Years ago, I worked with a NICU colleague who had been a teacher in the city school district before she became a nurse. Kathy understood evaluation far better than I did at the time. She told me:

“Gather all the evaluation forms. Throw out the glowing 5-star reviews. Throw out the 1-star reviews at the bottom. Then take the middle stack seriously. That’s where you find what actually needs improvement.”

She was right.

The extreme ends reflect emotion.

The middle reflects reality.

Five-star course reviews tell you how learners felt, not what they gained. That’s why five-star reviews don’t prove a course is effective — they are the least reliable indicators of instructional quality.

Her advice stays with me to this day.

7. Five-star reviews only measure Level 1 of Kirkpatrick — the lowest bar

The Kirkpatrick model describes four levels of evaluation:

  • Reaction — Did they like it?
  • Learning — Did they learn it?
  • Behavior — Did they apply it?
  • Results — Did it improve outcomes for the organization?

Five-star reviews measure only the first level. They tell you nothing about retention, skill transfer, safer decisions, fewer device errors, stronger compliance, reduced risk, improved outcomes, return on investment (ROI), or increased leads for the marketing funnel.

Subject matter experts (SMEs), no matter how brilliant, rarely if ever think in terms of Levels 3 or 4. They think in terms of accuracy and content ownership. They don’t think in terms of organizational outcomes unless someone guides them there.

But organizations depend on Levels 3 and 4. That is where impact lives. (More on that later.)

8. Five-star reviews ignore what stakeholders actually care about

By their nature, five-star reviews only address what your learners care about. What about the concerns of your other stakeholders?

Hospitals care about:

  • clinical judgment
  • safety
  • competency validation
  • lower error rates
  • better decisions

Medical device companies care about:

  • correct device use
  • less liability
  • confident clinicians and parents
  • fewer support calls
  • brand loyalty
  • risk reduction
  • more leads at the top of the funnel

Businesses care about:

  • consistency
  • behavior change
  • improved performance
  • fewer mistakes
  • stronger results, i.e., return on investment

None of these outcomes appear in a five-star review. Not one.

If your course supports a larger initiative, and most courses do, you need measures aligned with that initiative.

Stars don’t provide that. That’s why five-star reviews don’t prove a course is effective.

9. Five-star reviews create a false sense of security

When a course earns praise, people assume it works. They call it validated, proven, or complete. But if those reviews reflect only comfort, entertainment, or ease, then the praise is misleading.

Five-star reviews don’t reveal gaps. They hide them.

An organization can invest months or years in a program that feels successful but accomplishes little. That is the real risk.

What to measure instead

Learner reviews are part of an effective evaluation for a course, but if you want to prove your course is effective, you need more metrics. A strong course answers questions like:

  • What learning gap does this course close?
  • What should the learner do differently at the end? (Not what they should “know.”)
  • How will we prove they can do it?
  • Where do they practice?
  • What behavior should change?
  • What performance indicator should improve?
  • How does this support the organization’s goals?

These are the indicators that matter. Not whether someone enjoyed the slides.

Bottom line

When you understand why five-star reviews don’t prove a course is effective, you stop mistaking satisfaction for learning and entertainment for competence. Reviews can be pleasant and reassuring, but they are not instructional evidence. They measure a reaction, not a result.

Real effectiveness is measured by what the learner can do when the course is over, and whether that action supports the goals of the organization.

That is what true instructional impact looks like.
